Warren Buffet Doesn’t Have Health Insurance

Monday, May 10th, 2004

Jameson Penn writes to let us know that it’s “National Cover the Uninsured Week,” courtesy of our good friends at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. That “40 million uninsured Americans” sure sounds scary, doesn’t it?

Golly, we’re the richest nation on earth. How cold and uncaring could we be?

Turns out, not quite so cold and uncaring as it seems.

Another one of those: “Things every American should be aware of but isn’t or doesn’t care to know the truth”.
It’s funny how the (liberal) media has tricked everyone. I saw today on CNN how every possible indicator (yes, including job growth too John F’ing Kerry) shows our economy getting a lot better yet they ran a poll that said 53% of the people think the economy is getting worse?

While I agree that the usual numbers are inflated, he seems to be playing with numbers, too. For example, he dismisses the largest group, college students, which two interestingly worded sentences, concluding, “it is hard to believe that most of these people have no other resources supporting them.” Well, there you go.

Shit — what if Buffett gets sick?

    Jeff,

Many (if not most)universities have a campus health center that is paid for with student fees each semester.

The people that will benefit the most from a national health plan are companies. They will drop the coverage (and the expense) they provide like a hot potato. The government will have to pick up those people as well. Companies who still provide insurance to their employees will now have to pay a premium for their own employees and more in taxes to support the uninsured people. The employees of these companies will be doing the same thing: paying for their own insurance and subsidizing the insurance of others.

What Steve is describing will result in the government having the monopoly on funding health care, whtether or not it becomes a monopoly by law (as would have happened if Hillarycare had become law).

What is really scary is that, under such a monopoly, you will have no alternatives to go to to fund your health care — therefore, even without a de jure monopoly, the government will effectively control your access to such care, not only the funding (as today’s insurance companies are limited to).

Yet, many of the same people who are upset about the civil-liberties implications of the Patriot Act, think that such a health care system is good for this nation?

They need to engage their brain before going out in public.

James D — the problem is that individuals concentrate on the most lagging indicators of economic growth — employment and raises.

That’s why many of them think the way you describe.

OTOH, I can appreciate the forward progress of this economy … maybe it’s because I view anything above burning in hell as a privelege?

Wow Rich. I’m priviledged to be an American too, but by your measurements, you should always be happy :)

Don’t worry, MattG, if Warren Buffett falls ill, there are literally hundreds of convenience stores and gas stations in Nebraska (no, really!) that will roll out the old coffee cans and Slim-Jim containers with slots cut out of the lids and wrap a photocopied plea to help out the poor billionaire who has no health insurance…

There are just as many people who have no problems with the Patriot Act whatsoever (and would like to see it’s measures made permanent, and broadened) and feel that such a health care system would be detrimental.

I’m dreaming of a utopia where both far reaching big government programs are reviled for what they are.

If anyone wants to see a national healthcare policy, look at Tennessee’s answer to Medicaid. It was going to be the model of national healthcare. It is failing miserably and taking Tennessee’s budget withit.

    See what I wrotehere.

Jason — I do think that many elements of the Patriot Act are nothing more than leveling the technological playing field between law enforcement and the coalition of perps and leftist lawyers that reflexively oppose the cops. Those elements are legitimate.

I consider much of the opposition driven less by real concern for civil liberties (like preserving my life), and more by reflexive disdain for John Ashcroft and his personal belief system.

However, I believe the American people will exercise more vigilance against real encorachments upon our civil liberties from the Patriot Act or its offspring, than they will against the soft, cuddly fascism of nationalized healthcare, given human nature.

Scotty B, right you are. I misread the article he linked to and thought they were counting those covered at campus clinics as insured.
