Friday, May 7th, 2004Several weeks ago, I pointed out that the states most likely to lose jobs to outsourcing also happen to be the states with the crappiest tax and regulatory schemes, crappy meaning “hostile to business.”
A piece at FEE points to a new report from the National Association of Manufacturers that further makes the case:
The central finding by NAM is this: â??While manufacturers have many challenges in the current global environment, it is the finding of this report that domestically imposed costsâ??by omission or commission of federal, state, and local governmentsâ??are damaging manufacturing more than any foreign competitor and adding at least 22.4 percent to the cost of doing business from the United States.â?…Here are some other findings:
1) â??The U.S. corporate tax burden reduces cost competitiveness by 5.6 percentage pointsâ?;
2) â??U.S. employee benefit costs are higher than most of its major competitorsâ?;
3) â??The regulatory compliance burden on U.S. manufacturers is the equivalent of a 12 percent excise taxâ?;
4) â??Pollution abatement alone reduces U.S. cost competitiveness by at least 3.5 percentage points.â?
Want to keep jobs in the U.S.? Tell your Congressman to ease the burdens on business.
Hey now… quit making sense. The solution to every problem is more government, why can’t you see that? We need to artificially raise wages until we aren’t competitive, and then try to create a world government to do the same, until there’s only one business left… government.

John Peterson, a Republican incumbent in a pretty safe Republican district happily votes the party line to a half-trillion dollar deficit and what’s his big election year initiative? It’s $25 million in new federal spending to help schools implement mandatory student drug testing programs. And he says that more money than that is really needed but this is a start.
His economically illiterate constituency will happily re-elect him because they haven’t a clue about what a free economy is all about. They think “good jobs” come from government and quasi-governmental Soviet-style central planning, such the county “Development Corporation”, which does things like funnel a few million in loan guarantees to selected businesses to do things the free market wouldn’t do, and then they brag about how many jobs government has therefore “created”.
It works well enough to save Specter’s sorry socialist hide for yet one more term. He will be back in August for his annual vote-buying tour. One year my idiot state rep actually introduced Specter as “a social liberal but economic moderate”.

Cost of employment has been rising faster than wages, and it’s largely because of healthcare.
Time for a nationalized system that doesn’t exclude anyone?

Radley, I keep coming back here for the same reason I am supporting President Bush — both of you, while less-than-perfect in my view, get enough things right to make my effort worthwhile … and are better in your respective endeavors than the alternatives available.

Well, the current system certainly isn’t working. It’s getting more and more expensive, fewer and fewer people are covered.
Have any suggestions? Leaving it up to the market appears to have failed miserably.

The market hasn’t failed healthcare, quite contrary.
Reason for the skyrocketing cost of healthcare? Medical advancement, which is actually a result of market forces, there’s profit in figuring out the next great cure so someone is looking for it.
My motherinlaw complains about the cost of her medicines. I say nothing to her but she’d probably be dead without them.
Healthcare & pharmaceuticals is regulated only slightly less than banks, Jon H. If you think market forces are the only determining factor of prices on both of those, you are seriously mistaken.
No one has a right to prolong their life, just because someone else has the know-how to make it happen.
End of story.
i was fascinated by the article “how structural costs imposed on US manufacturers harm workers and threaten competitiveness” the jeremy leonard report. this is good stuff. the kind of writing that is convincing, quantitatively based and substantive, and i loved reading it. some of the author’s recommendations for reducing overhead costs on corporations include-
*reduce corporate tax burden and reform treatment of foreign source income.
*reduce the burden of rising health coverage costs and encourage greater consumer responsibility for health status and coverage costs.
*establish a more objective cost-benefit review process for proposed and existing regulations that takes full account of adverse business impacts.
