Quiet Defiance

Friday, April 30th, 2004

Any of you in the Tampa-St. Pete area need to take a trip to Buddy’s Smoking Pig restaurant. Spend some money while you’re there.

When the state snuffed all cigarettes in restaurants, the popular barbeque joint turned outlaw.

“We put a sign up that says this is a smoking establishment,” explained owner and namesake Buddy Clark. “I think everybody should have a right to do what ever they want to do.”

“The people have a choice. They can either eat here in the non-smoking, or eat up here in the smoking. Or if they don’t like it at all, they can go to another restaurant,” added Clark’s wife, Barbara…

…Meanwhile, Buddy’s smokers and non-smokers both appreciate the restaurant’s atmosphere. None of them want to see Wildwood’s favorite lunch spot close up shop.

“You can’t smell it at all over here so it doesn’t really bother me,” a diner explained from the non-smoking section.

“Who in the hell is the state to come in and tell you and me what we can do in our own place?” observed smoker Sonny Schmidt.

We need more Buddy and Barbara Clarks. Sounds like good eats, too.

It takes courage… I hope they’re able to hold true to that when men with guns try to come and make them do what someone else wants them to do with their own property. Funny how the nannies never word it that way when they’re trying to sell those sorts of ideas to legislators.

Amen? I live in a city that has an outright ban on smoking in public buildings, including restaurants and pubs. And, as a non-smoker, I think it’s GREAT. I can go to a bar and listen to a live band without feeling like I’ve smoked my very own pack of cigarettes. Those that want to smoke simply go outside. Creating a smoking section in a pub is like creating a peeing section in a swimming pool. It just doesn’t work!

Man are you on the wrong blog Mr. Anonymous ….

Funny, I’ve always thought that creating a smoking section in a pub is like creating a ‘free speech’ zone at a demonstration: put’em far enough away, and you’re not even bothered by them…

Not to be critical of your point of view, anon, but a lot of municipalities that do not allow smoking inside private businesses also don’t allow smoking OUTSIDE of those businesses. Take your pick, busted for smoking inside or busted for loitering outside…

I’m not fond of cigarettes or cigarette smoke, either, but there’s a lot of stuff I’m not too keen on, and I have yet to consider criminalizing an activity I find repugnant to be an effective solution for most of the problems I see in the world.

I’ve wondered, are these bans only against the act of smoking itself, or of lighting a cig? In other words, if someone lit the cig and let it burn in the ashtray but *did not* smoke it, would that still be banned? If you don’t take a drag off of the cig, are you still *smoking* it?

I know, it’s splitting hairs, but just curious. Doubt the excuse would stand up in court anyway. :)

Anon’s comment is typical of those who didn’t show up for Government 101. Mob rule is much more dangerous than second-hand smoke. And it smells worse.

I’m moving to Tampa in the next couple weeks so I’ll be sure to drop by.

    - Well, if you own the pool?…

I like that. Anyone want to make a T-shirt out of that? :)

btw, its worse than you think. The ordinance in Florida came from a ballot initiative that posed the question “Do we want to protect restaurant workers from second hand smoke, yes or no.” That’s verbatim, but very close to the actual ballot question if memory serves. Florida Ballot initiatives go straight into the State constitution, and this one won by 70%

I understand people’s concern about big government. However, when you all talk about and refer to personal freedoms, you should consider those of us who want to see shows, eat dinner, etc. without inhaling carcinogens. If I sit in a smoky bar for a night, I am effectively smoking a pack of cigarettes. And guess what, defenders of freedom? I have no choice aside from bringing my own oxygen tank. If establishments can effectively contain all smoke to smoking sections, I’m all for it. Otherwise, you might as well bring some radon and set it in the middle of the restaurant. Or perhaps a UV lamp. I mean, we don’t want our lungs to have all the mutating fun, do we?
