Sanchez on Nnamdi
Wednesday, March 31st, 2004Be sure to check out Julian Sanchez at 12:00pm today on the Kojo Nnamdi show, WAMU 88.5AM.
He’ll be discussing the smoking ban with Kevin O’Sullivan of the Irish Times, Michael “Tac” Tacelosky of Smokefree DC, Andrew Kline of the RAMW, and Andrew Hyland, a research scientist at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
Interesting fact: Andrew Hyland is currently funded by a grant sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Shocking.
Also of interest, in Tacelosky’s statement (linked above), he says “We donâ??t allow workers to be exposed to known carcinogens in any other workplace â??even if the owner discloses it, even if the employees say they don’t mind, and even if it would be cheaper for the employer to provide a less safe environment.”
Well now, that’s not true at all. Broad spectrum ultraviolet radiation (the sun); wood dust created in the shaping of wood (furniture manufacturing, for example); steroidal estrogens (birth contol and estrogen replacement therapy); nickel compounds (used in industrial applications); and beryllium compounds (used in everything from jewelry to nuclear reactors) have all been listed as carcinogens. And people work in the presence of all of these things every day.
My e-mail newsletter from Smokefree-DC says that it’s a call in show. 1-800-433-8850. Let’s ask “Tac” why he isn’t trying to pull all the lifeguards in from the beach.

yeah, and what isn’t a carcinogen?
For the right research grant any scientist will swear that oxygen poses a cancer risk, and that further research is required…..
Breathing is dangerous, everyone must stop this dangerous activity immediately.
I’m personally concerned with the levels of dihydrogen monoxide. Every time they do a biopsy on malignant tumors, there are significant amounts of this chemical compound present.
Surely the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation can throw some money at eradicating dihydrogen monoxide once and for all…
I believe I heard you on ‘Morning Edition’ discussing this very issue, Ms Oberwetter. I was fired up. I felt like I knew someone famous.
I felt a little famous. It was odd.
Holy cow you were on Morning Edition? I listen to that show almost every morning, but must have missed you. Crud.
First, I agree with your position on the smoking issue, although I am a non smoker, I feel it is more a free market and personal liberty issue than public health.
But, you state: “Well now, that’s not true at all. wood dust created in the shaping of wood (furniture manufacturing, for example); nickel compounds (used in industrial applications); and beryllium compounds (used in everything from jewelry to nuclear reactors) have all been listed as carcinogens. And people work in the presence of all of these things every day.
Yes, people work in the _presence_ of the items above every day, but there controls and regulations controlling the _exposure_ to each of your examples, and therefore controlling the cancer risk. The mere _presence_ (or even minor exposure) to a substance does not mean you will run an increased risk of cancer.
Note Mr. Tacelosky’s statement says “We donâ??t allow workers to be exposed to known carcinogens in any other workplace… ” This is also incorrect – there are acceptable exposures to carcinogens, and even the nanny state acknowledges this.
I think the liberty angle is much stronger here, but to correctly counter the anti’s attempted link to workplace health, we must acknowlege the difference between presence of a substance and harmful levels of exposure.
ANDRE: “We must acknowlege the difference between presence of a substance and harmful levels of exposure.”
I thought that’s what I was doing. It was the “We don’t allow workers to be exposed…” part of Tac’s statement that I was referring to, when I said “that’s not true at all.” Obviously we do allow people to work around carcinogens.
