“Prohibition has never worked.”
Saturday, March 13th, 2004That’s what HHS Sec. Tommy Thompson says at the end of this article.
Quaint, almost charming when a powerful political leader slips up and speaks the truth, isn’t it?
Sec. Thompson might want to cc these guys on the memo. I don’t think they got it.

What is “worked.”? We prohibit murder, rape, robbery, car theft etc. and they all continue to occur. As the L&E movement has shown, criminal penalties are merely a form of pricing and that the optimal crime rate–considering the costliness of prevention–is not zero. The real question is whether the costs of prohibition and the benefits (higher prices for drugs/alcohol/robbery/murder) is properly balanced.
I must agree with Steven G. There is a small town of 190 just outside San Antonio, Tex that maintains a 10 man full time police force that patrols 7 miles of the interstate which is almost 5 miles from the town area. One year they wrote more than 500,000 worth of tickets on the seven miles. Saving lives they said.
Most municipalities have ticket revenue projections in their annual budget and hire civilian rejects to write sufficient traffic tickets to meet it.
I as well as others have noticed that these civilian rejects will not write tickets of any kind on people that do not appear to have the means to pay.
I noticed today that a municipality in California were about to vote on a proposition that would ban the use of dihydrogen monoxide. Think about it and what the substance is.
The quality of people that run for any office is reaching an all time low. Their obvious intelligence level is setting records.
We need that ban on dihydrogen monoxide. I need the government to help me break my addiction to that horrific substance I guzzle in quantity every day.
It’s so awful and pervasive, it composes over 70% of my body. Would you believe I even run liters and liters of it over my ENTIRE BODY on a daily basis?!?
*sob*
Help! I need help! Save me, Nanny State, please!
oh the stupidity. Save me from the stupidity, someone please.
