Yankin’ DARE

Looks like No Child Left Behind might do a wee bit of good after all. A key provision in NCLB is to cut federal funding for education programs that can’t prove their effectiveness. Most of you probably know by now that the DARE program has been a wholesale failure since its inception — unless you count as “successes” the families DARE destroyed by instructing kids to rat out their pot-smoking parents.

And so thanks to NCLB, it’s gradually being fazed out of elementary and junior high curriculum.

Wonder how Betty Sembler feels about this?

NCLB bureaucrats might want to take a look abstinence-only sex ed next.

    Okay, so there are good points to the NCLB Act after all!! Unfortunately, I doubt that DARE and abstinence-only sex ed will go gently into that good night.

    Ooo…just the thought of two government programs colliding and anihilating each other gives me the shivers.

    Nonetheless, I share Joe’s pessimism.

    Dare was a force at GW. One year they played the Fab Five tough in the NCAAs, if I recall correctly. I thought he’d turn into a solid pro and then he just stopped improving.

    I just really dig the fact that in his 110 game NBA career, Yinka Dare dished out a total of 4 assists….that’s only 4 more than me and I have never played in an NBA game.

    I don’t know. DARE had a profound impact upon my life. To this day, whenever anyone asks me if I am a “People” or a “Folk,” I reply, “I am a student.” Perhaps that mantra was restricted to more urban programs, but it has always helped me stay away from gangs.

    I missed the reference, but then again I do have a bare strip accross my forehead from all those little feet.

    Accountabilty n the school system? Whoa there’s a concept. It’s too bad it has to come from the feds.

    Does the fact that you are so allergic to the chemicals in marijuana, that you could die while experimenting, have any importance in your argument? Also, don’t you think our neighborhood also had a profound impact on our choice not to particpate in drugs/gangs?
    By the way your political opinions are missed in Chicago…
