Spon·ta·ne·i·ty
Monday, March 8th, 2004I went in to have a little bit of dental work done today for the first time in a while. It was a lot better than I expected, just a couple tiny cavities. Then the dentist, who is a friend of mine, said to me, “The oral surgeon is in today. Since we’re going to be numbing you up anyway, do you want me to see if he can pop those wisdom teeth out of there for you? They’re going to be a problem if they don’t come out soon.”
Right side wisdom teeth…. gone. The other two are out of there next week. The Novocaine is just now starting to wear off. I’m feelin’ your pain, Moxie!

One trick is to put tea bags on the empty sockets to deaden the pain.
No, not that other kind of teabagging. Real bags of real tea.
I recently had one cavity filled, and my wife had a couple. No numbing. Hurrah for the water-laser. By the time you walk out the door, it doesn’t feel like you’ve had work done.
Wisdom teeth are another matter. Ouch.
I used to have a great dentist when i was growing up. About ten years ago he had to retire due to his shaky hands, and we got a new guy who seemed very good at first. A couple of years ago, during a routine check up he assured me that my wisdom teeth would need pulling sometime soon (i’m now 30)and that i might as well get them done there and then. He then gave me five or six injections and attacked me about the mouth with a pair of pliers. I don’t like to think i’m a big wuss, and i never had a problem with the dentist before, but this guy was brutal. Despite my protestations that the injections didn’t seem to be working he went about me like a motor mechanic would go about prising a troublesome tyre from it’s rim. Then he put a leg up on the arm of the chair, to effect a greater purchase, and i knew it was time to leave. I fled the surgery with my semi-extracted wisdom tooth bleeding but still fast.
Naturally, i got another dentist, who informed me there was nothing wrong with my wisdom teeth and if they were not causing me any trouble then there was no reason for them to come out. Since then, i’ve visited a couple more dentists who are divided on the issue as to whether they have to come out. My wisdom tooth settled back in, solid as a rock and i still have never had any trouble with them other than that inflicted by the dental industry.
I still don’t know if i actually need to have the buggers out, but i will wait until i find a dentist i can trust before committing to handing over my hard earned cash in exchange for pain.
psssttt…
hey kid….
want some oxycotin….
shh….I gotta get back to my real job.
Live from the golden microphone of the EIB Network. This is…..
My childhood dentist told me over and over that my wisdom teeth were fine and didn’t need to be removed. But now, they are ramming my two bottom front teeth, the ones right in the center, together. My adulthood dentist, whom I really like, is telling me I should get my wisdom teeth pulled and that those rammed teeth cannot be fixed without braces. Shouldn’t I be able to sue for mis-diagnosis?
I think my childhood dentist just wanted me to have a reason to keep coming back.
Sympathies Keiffer.
Thanks to the wonders of water fluoridation, I’ve never had a cavity. It really is worth the trade-off. I don’t miss the purity of my essence anyway.
Poor Thing….I feel your pain.
I just had all four of mine pulled last week. I look like Fat Monica and I have a bruise on my face. Vicodin is my only source of happiness these days!
