Shots Rang Out
Wednesday, March 3rd, 2004Witnessed my first bank robbery at lunch today.
I was having a ham n’ brie sandwich in McPherson park in midtown D.C. Apparently, the guy came out of the Chevy Chase bank, when a security guard or cop — not sure which — put two bullets in him.
This was about a hundred yards from me. Is it wrong that I thought the whole thing was kinda’ cool?
UPDATE: Here’s the write-up. The guy was robbing the armored car outside the bank. He was shot twice in the leg, by a security guard.

The only one dead is the robber, right?
No, I’d say there’s nothing wrong with that.
It isn’t as though you made fun of some poor little girl’s crippling birth defect.
Sorry. Couldn’t resist.
Seriously, though, last night’s post was classy. As someone who is personally very well-aquainted with the taste of his own foot, I empathize completely. Don’t be too hard on yourself. The rest of us can take care of that for you.
:)
That’s pretty scary.
I’m glad I don’t live there!
Thats the kind of justice i like…quick & cheap
Cool…if the only one hurt was the criminal.
Two notes…
Have lunch in a safer location.
Do not admit to eating Brie in a public forum.
Frank N,
Maybe you didn’t catch it, but Radley lives in DC… he’d have to leave the city to find a safer place to have lunch!! haha
So, was the robber killed by the security guard/cop? I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anyone shotin real life… you’d think I would remember if I had.
Lucky bastard!
I note the fact, that it is illegal for a police officer, and especially a security guard, to fire his weapon in public, where the criminal is no longer posing a physical threat (i.e. holding his gun in a threatening manner) This policy should also go for cops choosing to pursue a high speed chase (opposed to catching his license plate 95% of the time and catching him at home) while risking the safety and lives of everyone else on the road. Good thin this local cop didn’t hit any pedestrians.
As a Classic liberal, I still think the burden is still on the police to correctly nab the criminal (all rights included) without hurting him (unless he is currently posing a physical threat).
Does anyone here remember the 6th Amendment?
I don’t think it said anything regarding gunfire/due process.
Of course, I wasn’t there, and I could be misinterpreting the whole situation.
I saw the same thing… is it wrong that I paid the police $10 to kick the guy?
Hrm… My assumption would be that it was an armed robbery. I believe everyone should be allowed to own whatever guns they want to own, but my own personal belief is that if you use a gun in the commission of a crime (i.e. threaten someone with it) then you should accept that if anyone gets a bead on you, you will be shot dead on the spot. It’s a simple personal choice.
So it WAS a security guard…

Very cool by my standards.

I was not there but I doubt the police shot the guy in front of that many witnesses without probable cause. The police are not always the bad guys, contrary to what a lot of people seem to think.
That’s friggin nuts! So, Radley did you at LEAST get to finish your lunch in peace?
SH
Are you a conservative yet?
I’m not too far from that park. I would have liked to seen that go down myself…
That sucks Radley. Nothing cool like taht ever happens out at Tysons Corner.
i would have been traumatized, that is scary, but i am laughing reading your comments…thanks for the chuckles and chalk one up for the good guys…michelle
Those from DC will notice that this took place less than 200 yards from the front door of the Washington Post:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A27458-2004Mar3.html
The criminal had a pump-action shotgun and was stopped because a private security guard was carrying a handgun and knew how to use it. This is the same WashPost, mind you, that has spent the last two weeks hand-wringing about the evils of handguns. Will the guard get a mention on the editorial page for his heroism? Don’t bet on it.
You have to be truly delirious if you think anyone wants to prevent security guards from carrying guns.
Shoulda’ been one crook, one dead crook, one shot!
Is it wrong that I thought the whole thing was kinda’ cool?
Yes this means you are almost certainly going to hell. Sorry.
As a guy who drove armored cars in Detroit for a spell, I can say that when you are in the s*it, it aint too cool, but if you walk away from it, you realize the adrenaline rush and edge you get from it. I can totally dig adrenaline junkies that do wild stuff like jumping out of a chopper and skiing down a mountain.
I used to love to eat roasted garlic with brie cheese…until a female employee of mine told me that brie tastes like “man-juice.” Haven’t touched the stuff since.
BANK ROBBERY
Radney Balko witnesses one. This was about a hundred yards from me. Is it wrong that I thought the whole thing was kinda’ cool?Nope. Because witnessing violent criminals get their comeuppance is always cool….
People, the reason Radley is going to burn in Hell is bcse God hates Ham and Brie sandwiches: http://meat.tamu.edu/kosher.html
Re Brie and “man juice.” Don’t know who your female employee was dating at the time, but he might want to get that checked out.
Security guard did his job and the robber got shot. The problem with this is? I would think it was pretty neat to see as well.

I’d recommend the Clarendon metro stop. There is a great vietnamese resturaunt there called Cafe Saigon. The curry chicken with coconut milk is amazing.
Or Roslyn to Pho 79. Best Pho I’ve ever had. Could eat there for breakfast lunch and dinner.
Oh, and no watching the bad guy get caught and stopped from committing further criminal acts is indeed cool.
Steve,
Metro up to U Street and Ben’s Chili Bowl. A-freakin’-amazing.
