I don’t know how much else can be talked about in the wake of last night’s Super Bowl. Even as the Panthers made it a game in the second half, at least at the party I was at, everyone was still only talking about one thing. Thank God for Tivo, because it allowed us to dissect the incident multiple times. I’m rarely shocked by anything I see on TV, but my jaw dropped when it happened. So the question is, was it on purpose? Or, who knew and when did they know it?
My take is that CBS didn’t know. MTV may not have even known. Justin and Janet knew. As much as they acted shocked, I can’t see it as anything other than good acting. Justin clearly grabbed and tore, something that, I have to imagine, is hard to do ‘unintentionally.’ And Jackson has a new album coming out and is definitively in need of some hype, other than what is happening with her brother. Both make it unlikely that the exposure was accidental.
CBS, and even MTV, have too much to lose by the whole thing for me to think it was likely that they knew. Or at least that their higher-ups knew. The NFL is pissed, and probably rightfully so, the Super Bowl is suppose to be a family friendly event of big men hitting each other and slightly less avert sexual references in beer commercials. A completely bare breast has no place in that environment. I don’t think whatever buzz CBS and even MTV get related to the stunt would be worth it to them to make the NFL and middle America as mad as was inevitable. Whether the producers, or director knew, I can’t say. Still, I don’t think the conspiracy went all the way to the top.

Update 2: Apparently people with TiVo were not terribly offended by the incident. It was the most replayed moment in the history of TiVo. I didn’t figure my party was alone.

Personally, I’ve never participated in a political exit poll as I’m leaving Kauffman or Arrowhead Stadiums, so I cannot attest to the political affiliation of my favorite teams’ fans, nor those of any other fans of MLB or the NFL (everyone knows that all soccer fans, regardless of team affiliation, are commies).
Here in KC, we hate the Raiders simply because they are the Raiders, and we hate the Cardinals because their fans are sore losers (Jorge Orta was safe, it was almost 20 years ago, so get over it). Politics belong in sports about as much as MTV belongs at the Superbowl.
Whatever happened to regional or conference rivalries? Cubs fans irrationally hating Sox fans (or Red Sox fans reflexively hating Yankees fans) make more sense to me than rooting against a team because their stadium happens to be located in the same state as a Presidental candidate’s home. I suppose that, since DC has no pro teams of their own, this sort of thing seems to make sense there… Out here in the hinterlands, however, our rivalries and hatreds for other teams’ fans are simple and direct in their irrationality…
I just can’t believe Timberfake is calling it a ‘wardrobe malfunction’ …..

It’s hard to get worked up when the only real tie a team has to its locality is the amount of welfare it can extort out of the state and city.
The Patriots team,well known fans, as well as the ownership have made continued stands against individualism and in favor of collectivism. I’m not sure I would call that a political stand, but it is certainly a philosophical one- one that is manifested in socialist polticians and policies. I believe that is far worse than any simple political partisanship. I recall Fat Teddy’s celebration against the individual the last time NE won two years ago. This certainly influenced my rooting against the Pats this time out. I had a lengthy discussion with one of my best friends (perhaps the only one I know who sees the fault in collectivism) prior to the Superbowl about how the Patriots like to be introduced as collective, downplay individual effort,etc. We were at a somewhat large Superbowl viewing party. Sure enough, no sooner had the game ended and the Trophy presentation begun , the Patriots representative ( I assume it was the owner , but not sure who he is) began speaking against individual achievement and in favor of the team concept. I exchanged a mutual “I Told You So” glance with my friend. Then I interrupted the victory speech with my outburst railing against collectivism. I think it was a bit much, but I dont like to see individualism under attack. Plus I dont think think real “Patriots” are communists.

We’re living in a couuntry that spends trillions of dollars on pornography, and a half-second flash of breast is detrimental to our moral fabric?? This is why I stopped subscribing to Tivo. Besides the outrageous amount they charge (I stopped back when it was only 9.95/month, equal to my net access back then) but because they take all that you do on your Tivo and sell those statistics to major networks like they are the new Nielsens.

I personally found the McDonalds ad suggesting the smell of cheeseburgers could spur a middle-aged man into a sexual frenzy that his wife was more then willing to oblige on the kitchen floor to be, if not offensive, at least not very appetizing.
