Last night on Newshour With Jim Lehrer, WaPo columnist Mark Shields declared, crankily, “It’s an insult to Americans when a politician stands up and says that Americans know better how to spend their own money than the government does. I’m tired of it.”

Yes. I know what you’re thinking. And I think you’re right. It may be applesauce time for Mark Shields.

Now, it is an insult when President Bush says such things, as he did in the SOTU, because of course he doesn’t mean them.

But Shields was speaking more generally.

    Comments like that make me want to let out a Howard Dean-like primal scream. Isn’t there any way we can force these people to emigrate to Canada?

    Shields is barely intelligible at his best. Are you sure he wasn’t referring to spending on things like highways and the military?

    They would still be “right-wing” in Canada. I’d be happy to trade Layton, Broadbent and McGuinty for Shields, Maher and Carville. In the same vein as Jagr for Carter. Are you kidding me?
