CBS Balks
Friday, January 16th, 2004CBS has refused to air the winning 30-second spot from MoveOn.org’s anti-Bush commercial contest. Their reasoning: a network policy against airing issue advocacy ads.
Of course, that didn’t prevent CBS from airing a series of ONDCP-sponsored ads in 2001 accusing pot-smokers of funding al-Qaeda. I’d say those were certainly “issue ads,” wouldn’t you?

Another instance of The Man keeping the unreasonable dumbasses of the world down.
Is this just the usual spin for people without brain cells. These same people who want to keep Social Security as is, think the Prescription Drus bill is too small, and created welfare, are now telling us the kids will pay.
We are all paying from now until forever. Every time an old person puts a pill in his mouth we are paying for it. Every time a senior cashes his S.S. check we are paying for it.
All of a sudden democrats care about us having to pay later for what they spend now. Get real!
Exactly Peter. Talk about the biggest bunch of hippocrites …..
This is my first post, so I am prepared to be shot, multiple times, but; I believe that the ONDCP commercials that you find objectionable were aired during Superbowls televised on ABC, not CBS, and CBS’ statement is not, therefore, inconsistent.
I’ll defend Democrats only because Republicans are certainly no better. I got suckered into the Republican mantra of “fiscal responsibility” in the early to mid 90’s, only to find out that it only applies to when a Democrat controls the White House. Consider me #!*$ing pissed off for having been duped by them. I don’t have any love for Democrats, per se, but I don’t harbor any ill will against them for this add.
The message is well delivered, political ambitions aside.
Gary, “Republicans campaign like libertarians but govern like socialists.”
The ONDCP commercials continued well after the Superbowl,in several versions, on multiple networks. I am not certain, but it is likely they were on CBS.

Sorry about the double. Stupi K^omputer
Point of order here- CBS will be running ONDCP ads during the superbowl this year, along with one or two other ‘issue’ oriented ads.
The thing I would have us all keep in mind is that while CBS refers to this as a ‘policy’ regarding issue advocacy ads, what that really means is a choice.
They choose which ads to run or not run based on several issues, including but not limited to, what they think might or might not offend their viewers and/or other paying sponsors.
CBS is gun-shy now after the fracas that resulted from the ‘Reagans’ fiasco. In that frame of mind they are being careful to avoid generating another issue- and lets face it- the ONDCP ads will not likely generate such a response.
Let’s not forget that the contest that this ad won was widely criticized for the two Bush=Hitler ads that made it onto MoveOn.org’s website. While those drug commercials are stupid they aren’t really insulting. Either people agree with them or dismiss them for the ridiculous waste of time that they are. CBS should just be honest and say that they don’t want to anger viewers during the prime marketing time of the year. It’s not like they are hurting for advertisers who are willing to pay the 2+ million dollars to advertise during the Super Bowl either.
Don’t be stupid Bobby, MoveOn didn’t ask for the Hitler ads, and they didn’t award them any prizes.
None of the top 10 Ad winners on MoveOn are the least bit offensive. The Ad that they actually want to show on CBS Makes the point that it’s our children that Bush is charging his tax cut and spending programs to, and it does it in a (slightly) humorous way.
MoveOn ought to sue CBS for exhibiting favoritism in whose Ads they run. A TV station using the public airwaves doesn’t (or shouldn’t) have the right to refuse to run an issue ad unless they refuse them all. Including those lame-ass drug ads.
Bones,
It seems that you have completely missed my point and you have been extremely rude in the process. I am simply saying that many will associate anything that comes from MoveOn with the stories of the Hitler ads and there are many who like Bush and would not like the ad.
I have in fact seen the winning ad and think it is very well done and isn’t offensive to me at all, but I can see why CBS would not want to be divisive.
Also, I don’t think the ad is humorous (even slightly) and it doesn’t seem to me that there was any intention for it to be humorous.
Just because you might disagree with my opinion doesn’t make it stupid and you represent yourself poorly having stooped to name calling. Reasonable people can disagree.
Bones, your statement that CBS should be sued for choosing not to run this ad is exactly what’s wrong with this country today. Are you a socialist? CBS can do whatever it wants to do. They are not a govt agency (at least not officially - kidding…).
If you want to change their behavior/programming then have their audience boycott the station and raise hell as they did with the “Reagan” thing. You don’t sue a company into doing what you want. That’s ridiculous, immature, and unintelligent.
Ms. Dani,
True, CBS is not a gov’t agency, but they are using public airwaves for profit. After all, if enough people complain about their lack of objectivity in PSA’s (which they are required by law to air if they want to continue enjoying the privelege of using our airwaves), the FCC might make it a tough day in Black Rock sometime in the near future.
That being said, does that mean that I think they should be forced to show the MoveOn ads during the AFC-NFC Championship Game*? No, but they should think long and hard about what constitutes an “issue” and apply their policy consistently.
ONDCP IS a gov’t agency, spewing forth propaganda and half-truths, bordering on slander. Their ‘public service’ message is suspect at best, but since the recent and current administrations have bought into their dog and pony show, it would be folly for a network to turn them down. GWB could call Colin, tell him to reign his son in at the FCC, and poof, no more CSI. And nobody wants that…
* As I do not have the wherewithal to refer to the AFC-NFC Championship as its more popular name, I will refrain from drawing the attention of the legal department of the National Football League.
Bravo, Ms. Dani! But I am also thinking like a few others here that for the Dems to talk about the Republican spending unfavorably is like Mark David Chapman telling John Hinckley that he went too far. . .

DOH! So sorry. I’m an IT guy by trade so I have no excuse.
“While those drug commercials are stupid they aren’t really insulting.”
Actually, I found them very insulting. First, the idea that pot comes from “cartels” is as ridiculous a concept as I can think of. Cocaine, heroin, and other drugs with very high profit margins tend to draw violence to them. Pot prices are so low as to discourage such violent measures. Second, the al-Qaeda link to the drug world is through the production of opium poppies, not through marijuana. This is well-documented enough to make the ONDCP’s claims seem just plain retarded.
The above post was directed to Bobby…sorry for not metioning that up there.
Jason,
While I too thought the ONDCP’s ads were uncalled for and I found them insulting. I’d like to add that the MJ trade can be quite violent. And further up the pot chain there is a lot of money that is at stake.
Jason:
Sounds like you got some cheap pot out where you live
Jason,
I stand corrected. I should have said not insulting to most. I think, however, they are far less divisive than the anti-Bush ad would be because most people who don’t agree with ONDCP ads just don’t take them very seriously at all. The anti-Bush ad has some truth to it which will really upset Bush supporters.
I wish they would just ban all political or issue ads during the Super Bowl. I want to watch the game and possibly some of the light hearted product commercials but I like my sporting events apolitical. The MoveOn ad will get plenty of air time but I don’t care to see it during the Super Bowl and I’m glad I won’t.
I don’t think CBS should have to cut out issue advocacy ads, because who then determines the political correctness of each ad? Are the Bud-weis-er frog ads anti-right issue ads because they could be seen by children as some sort of pet or cartoon character? What about Britney Spears in Pepsi commercials half naked and later kissing Madonna…is this a role model? Aerosmith with their ‘out-of-hand rock n roll’ (I could go on and on but I think you get the point if you’ve ever seen the O’Reilly Factor)?
While CBS is standing firm on some ads and not others - offensive to some, not at all to others - folks at Comedy Central, MTV, Fox, etc are essentially doing the same thing (and usually opposing the standpoint of a CBS, NBC, or ABC).
what has gotten into the heads of these nitwit liberal CBS executives rejecting the the Reagan fairytale and Moveon.org. Are they off the hash now or do they finally know how to utilize the basics of common sense.
Kim - yes, MJ trade *can* be violent, though as you say it is mostly on the higher levels. Trade in cocaine and heroin *is* violent on the *lower* levels. People get shot in the streets all the time over small amounts of crack or heroin. What’s the last case you heard about where a pothead shot his dealer for a dimebag? The simplest way to end any violence associated with drugs is to legalize them, because violence is merely a by-product of the black market.
Bobby - I agree, they should cut all issue ads, privately- or government-sponsored, from the Super Bowl. Just let it be a football game. That said, I *do* take the ONDCP ads seriously because they’re a further propagation of an immoral war upon US citizens who commit no greater crime than preferring one drug (coke, heroin, pot, etc) over another (alcohol, Xanax, tobacco, caffeine, etc).
PotHead - It’s a well known fact that the biggest cash crop in Tennessee is marijuana (as it is in several other Southern states, most notably Kentucky). Officially, of course, the big cash crop is tobacco - another drug, but one that it’s okay to use because the government taxes it.
