On a Monster Abroad, Destroyed
Sunday, December 14th, 2003The best news out of Iraq for a long time.
All credit to the troops. May they come home soon.
As so often happens, Auden has the right words:
“Perfection, of a kind, was what he was after,
And the poetry he invented was easy to understand;
He knew human folly like the back of his hand,
And was greatly interested in armies and fleets;
When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets.”

No matter how you feel about the war, this is a happy moment.
Idealistic drivel aside, a great thing.
Unimagined that Saddam would be captured alive. A great thing!
I think a more appropriate title might be “Dr. Frankenstein recaptures his creation”. Check the dates on Saddam’s litany of horrors – many were committed while he was receiving the eager support of the U.S.. Instead of patting ourselves on the back for it, we should be questioning whether or not we’re supporting an equally bad guy somewhere else. I realize that reminders of U.S. support for Saddam aren’t fashionable, but reality has an annoying habit of refusing to go away.
Teehee, Bob sure showed us!
America created Bob. Could he be the equally bad guy?
We were allies with Stalin too when it was in our interest to defeat a greater evil. No doubt when we were supporting Saddam Iran was the greater evil.
Of course in hindsight it is questionable which was the greater evil between Stalin and Hitler.
