Do you ever feel like there are just not enough hours in the day? Here’s a guide from tes at kuro5hin on how you can switch to the Uberman sleep schedule. By adjusting to go straight into REM sleep, apparently you can get by on 2 – 3 hours a day, broken up into six 20-30 minute naps.

As someone who is currently running on about 3 – 4 hours the last two days, I have to say that the idea sounds intriguing. Still, his description of some of the drawbacks will probably keep me on my “run yourself ragged for 4-5 days and then totally crash out” plan. For example, here is how tes recommends you get on the schedule:

Use physiological “tricks” to teach your body the cycle. I found that using a dawn simulation trick worked nicely. Every time I went to lay down, I set my monitor to wait thirty-two minutes, then begin running a program that had a strobe effect along with some excessively loud music. I also used two alarm clocks, and during the day I would adjust my blinds such that the sun would start shining in my face roughly a half an hour later. These would force me to become somewhat conscious for a while, which was all I needed to keep going.

Plus I don’t think I could afford to be a ‘zombie’ for the few weeks necessary to make the switch.

    I’ve heard stories that George Washington only slept about 4 hours each night and would catnap two or three times a day (no more than 15 minutes).

    I’ve heard a very similar story about Ben Franklin, which makes me very strongly doubt the veracity of either story.

    Actually, there is a wide spectrum of how much sleep a given person needs. It’s not unheard of for people to only need 2-3 hours of sleep a night. These people, unsurprisingly, tend to be very successful. There are also people on the other end who need 10-12 hours per night to get by.

    I learned this info in class on sleep/dreaming that I took in college, but I have a personal data point too… I used to share an office with eventual mp3.com founder Michael Robertson and he only slept 3 hours a night.

    Sleep 3 hours during the week, and sleep until the sun goes down on the weekend. Then your nights are free and you stay up thus repeating the cycle.
