Ring a Ding Ding

Thursday, October 30th, 2003

I can’t tell you how many times someone has called me in public and I’ve been embarassed at the lack of ring tone options pre-programmed into my cell phone.

Now that Virginia Postrel has instilled in all of us the importance of style, who wants to be publicly associated with Fur Elise when you could, for example, show everyone on the Metro your hipster status by setting your cell phone to Phil Collins and Phillip Bailey’s “Easy Lover?”

Well now you can. I give you the cell phone Ring Tone Jukebox.

Let me tell you – right now I’m going back and forth between the themes from “The Matrix”, “Magnum, P.I.”, and “In Da Club” by 50 Cent. You can’t beat it.

    More Ringtones

The Agitator posted today about another ringtone site, which I’m definitely going to have to visit because they have some other stuff that Zingy doesn’t….. You can find out about them at Ring Tone Jukebox – they have graphics and…

    “Easy Lover” rules.

Gary Numan’s “Cars” would rock, but they don’t have it.

I’ll stick with my “Take On Me” — one of the few songs that doesn’t lose anything by being reduced to monophonic bleeps (and more recognizable than Brian Eno and Phillip Glass).

“Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve. Very instrumental and soothing to the ear. Bonus: The Rolling Stones will sue you every time your phone rings.

    Phillip Glass rules.

    Julian:

Funny you should mention that. I have, as a freeware ROM image for the 1970′s era Mattel Intellivision videogame system, a MIDI sound file of “Take on Me” and I must agree with you, its instantly recognizable. It’s probably due to the fact that virtually all of the melody comes from one synthesizer being played by one finger (seemingly).

“Mission Impossible” for me. The phone renders it fairly well, and it’s got just the proper sense of alarm for whenever anyone is desperate enough to try to reach me on a phone.

My ringtone is a clip from 4’33″ by John Cage.

    Jon H -

    Clever.

    Joe Sims – thanks.

The phone renders it perfectly. Only problem is I don’t seem to get many calls anymore.

The only reason I have a cell phone is that I’m a cellular data tech. My phone has additional software active which gives me a dozen screens of network status data and the ability to lock onto a single GSM channel.

For a ringtone, I have the Star Wars cantina tune. I haven’t bothered changing it since the current contract began. I was working for the same provider during their buildout (and another one in between) and back then I was more into changing ringtones. Last one before I left was the Dead’s “Casey Jones”. I also found the Hungarian national song for one of the H1B network designers.
