Strange Things Are Afoot at the Circle K
Monday, September 15th, 2003HBO’s new experiment in television, K Street, was exactly what they said it would be: edgy. But what they didn’t tell us was that it would be edgy to the point of being confusing and annoying.
The plot: Mary Matalin, James Carville, Dennis from Ed, and Howard Stern’s wife from Private Parts have a consulting firm on K Street. Mary Matalin wants to do Republican things, and James Carville wants to Democratic things, like helping Paul Begala prep Howard Dean for a debate. It’s not quite hilarity that ensues.
As for Mary Matalin and James Carville–are they as horrible as they seem or are they just doing a bad job of acting like themselves? Who knows?
I’ll say this. It was at least intriguing and I’ll most likely watch to see what happens. I didn’t feel as alienated at the end of the show as I did at the beginning. But as the Washington Post review points out, it’s doubtful that anyone without a pre-existing interest in political consulting and spin-doctoring is going to develop one from watching this show.

I enjoyed watching Carnivale before K Street.
