I need to write a Fox column this weekend, too. And for it, I want to use an anecdote I once heard about Washington and Jefferson, and I’m wondering if any of you know the story, or where I can find it.

Something to the effect of Washington and Jefferson are having a meal, and one asks the other why he feels the need for a senate, i.e. an “upper” chamber to offset the “lower” chamber. The other uses some dish on the table to illustrate how the senate is the place where ideas from the house to “cool” before passing them into law.

As you can see, I’ve butchered the story. But if any of you know it, and can relay it to me, I’d be much obliged.

The Fox column this Thursday will be on the 17th Amendment.
