The road to indie rock success goes right through Winona Ryder according to one musical journalist.
Dina Wise, who writes for “Radar” magazine, says Ryder has stolen the hearts of numerous indie rockers since first snagging Replacements singer Paul Westerberg in 1989, including Third Eye Blind guy Stephen Jenkins, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Beck.

But dating Ryder is risky business. For every rocker like Grohl or Beck who overcomes the “ridden by Ryder” tag, someone like White Stripe Jack White or Julian Casablancas of the Strokes loses indie cred by dating Winona.

Wise warns wannabe rockers not to date Winona too early in their careers because they may tank like Soul Asylum’s David Pirner.

Now, Ryder is reportedly dating Conor Oberst of the indie band Bright Eyes, and if Wise’s theory holds true, the romance could hurt his career.

Far as I know, Matthew Sweet is the only indy who’s ever written a song called “Winona,” and I don’t think it’s about Ryder.

    Big Sweet fan here – he was asked about that, and said the song definitely wasn’t about Ryder.

    Don’t know if they qualify as “indie” but The Kennedys have a song called “Why, Winona, Why” – definitely about Ms. Ryder.

    Definately not indie rock, but Primus has a song called “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver”

    Almost none of the bands/singers mentioned are “Indie.” Thrid Eye Blind for example is pop, with its first album having about 5 pop radio singles and Adult Contemporary ariplay.

    God I hate Winona Ryder. Sje has never been a good actress. She has certainly been in good films, but she has never been a good actress. Look at her performances for what they are. Take them out of the context of the good film, and you’ll see that she has never had any talent. The fact that she’s a 2-bit psycho klepto whore has nothing to do with it. She’s a one-note actress, and that one note is sadly out of tune.
