More State Government Hijinx
Monday, May 19th, 2003Jane Galt finds an example that might top the Maryland legislators’ taxpayer-funded excursion to the Virgin Islands to discuss the lack of taxpayer funds:
In New York City — which is facing a monstrous budget crisis — the city council still found money to send activists to Albany to demonstrate for rent control.
Congress should keep Maryland and NYC in mind when state and city leaders plead for a federal bailout.

So, in a budget crunch… NYC spends tax revenue to send people to demonstrate for a policy that reduces the city tax revenue, and drives out investment???
I guess I shouldn’t really be surprised.
Well of course they do - seing how as rent controlled properties ever so conveniently have a funny way of ending up occupied by friends and supporters of politicians and various bureaucrats.
There has never been too little public money available to pay back, pay off, and bribe people into helping you get re-elected or promoted.
Congress’s probable reaction:
Mary who and New what?
Reant control is the biggest swindle ever perpetrated on an allegedly free market. If you ever wondered how New York can build 30,000 new housing units a year and still be short of apartments for poor slobs like me, this is one way it is done.
(Self-promotion alert) I rage against rent control some more here.
There are some very differring viewpoints on this.
