Pop Up Hell
Sunday, May 11th, 2003Does anyone know how I can stop these damn pop up instant messages I get on my computer?
Typically, I get between 30 and 40 of them a day. I can’t alt-F4 them away, and because they’re sized differently, I have to find each message’s close button. Aggravating.
The weird thing is that I don’t even use IM — they pop up whether the thing is turned on or not.
They even taunt me now. Every third message or so now says something like “aren’t you tired of getting messages like these?” or “I bet your sick of closing pop-up messages, aren’t you?”
Clever little bastards.

Sounds like this is the explanation and advice you’re looking for: http://netsecurity.about.com/library/weekly/aa030703a.htm
lookup spybot and ad-aware thru google and download them, they will completely rid your system of any spyware, adware, annoyance ware.
Try Pop-up Stopper from PanicWare (www.panicware.com).
Make sure that the Messenger service is disabled and stopped. If you’re using 2K/XP, right click My Computer, select Manage, double click the “Services and Applications” line on the right side, double click “Services.” Find the Messenger service, right click it, select Properties, set the “Startup Type” to disabled, hit the Stop button (if the service doesn’t stop on its own), click OK, and close the Computer Management window.
There are two kinds of popups: messenger popups, as the previous comment describes, and web popups.
To beat web popups, download the free tool proxomitron, at http://proxomitron.org
It works great, and is an indispensable tool.
Are you using Windows 2000 and are the messages all gray, more like a windows-based window than a web pop up advertisement?
I’m using XP, but yes, they are all gray, like a Windows-based window.
They aren’t web-based X-10 type pop-ups.
It’s Windows Messanger — the little blue man in the lower right hand corner. You can also deactivative him just clicking the icon. Go to options under “tools” and click off “run this program when windows starts” under “preferences”
They sound like “admin pop ups” which you can read all about and solve by following Andy’s directions in the fourth post.
Whups, you can read all about it by following the above link, and solve the problem by following Andy’s advice, but anyone who has this much trouble including a bit of html in their posts should clearly not be giving advice.
