The Center for Consumer Freedom says California textbook editors are purging items from copy that advocate unhealthy eating. Beyond parody.

California’s textbook review process routinely eliminates reference to foods considered unwholesome — French fries, sodas, cakes, and even ketchup and butter. Some of the outrageous changes made to textbooks and tests include:

– A piece on George Washington Carver, the inventor of peanut butter, was nixed because it might offend children who are allergic to peanuts.

– A picture of a birthday party was purged because it included an “unhealthy” birthday cake.

– The story “A Perfect Day for Ice Cream” was renamed “A Perfect Day.” Also cleansed from the tale were the chili burgers and pizza.

Maybe this item better fits under the “Life, Satire Inch Closer” header.

    I think its okay to eliminate the George Washington Carver references. That article is understating what he did. Most people know GWC invented the peanut itself, not just peanut butter. I think *that’s* why allergic kids might be offended. He basically invented something that poisons lots of kids.

    Ummm, Carver did not *invent* the peanut. He did develop over 300 products derived from peanuts, so I would agree that crediting him mainly with peanut butter greatly understates his contributions. He also developed hundreds of products from a wide assortment of other plants.

    B. Kieffer – I am pretty sure he invented the peanut. Are you 100% positive?

    I could swear George Washington Carver was the inventor of the peanut.

    Ther are 17 year old students in the California school system that can not READ the textbook, and they worry about a picture of a birthday cake in the textbook?

    I am nearly certain Carver invented the peanut. I personally am pissed at him for it.
