Monday, April 21st, 2003

There are more employees in the U.S. Department of Agriculture than there are farmers in the United States.

Here are some other fun facts from this week’s contest, which asked readers to send in interesting but inconsequential factoids:

East Aurora, N.Y., is about 100 miles west of Aurora, N.Y.

The amount of blood in the average human body is roughly equivalent to a case of beer.

The word “testicle” comes from the idea of ‘testimony’ to one’s maleness.

Duct tape is widely revered for its usefulness, but in 1998 a Department of Energy study revealed that duct tape is not that effective at repairing ducts.

Go share your newfound wisdom with the world.

One problem: The fact that there are more employees in the Dept. of Agriculture than there are farmers strikes me as EXTREMELY consequential.

Old joke: guy’s touring the dept. of agriculture and finds a bureaucrat despondent, weeping on his desk. “Hey, what’s wrong man?” the tourist asks. Choking back tears, the bureaucrat replies “my farmer died!”
