Stuff I’m Spinning

The Jayhaws, Rainy Day Music

Back to the old Byrds, Gram Parsons-ish sound the band had when Marc Olsen fronted the group. Folksy, country-flavored, and melody driven. I like it.

Neutral Milk Hotel, Aeroplane Over the Sea

Think Syd Barret + Flaming Lips + Badly Drawn Boy. A concept album with some lively and interesting experimentation, but dominated really by charming accoustic guitar work and the urgent, disarming vocals of Jeff Mangum.

The White Stripes, Elephant

Yes, I’ve promised a review. It’s still on the way. My favorite song changes each time I listen. First, it was “There’s No Home For You Here,” then “The Hardest Button to Button,” then “In the Cold, Cold Night,” then “The Air Near My Fingers.” Now it’s “Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine.” The album just keeps getting better.

The Flaming Lips, Yoshemi Battles the Pink Robots

Never been much of a Flaiming Lips fan, so it took me awhile to pick this up, despite that people whose taste generally runs with mine have been enthusiastically recommending it. I guess I’m a Flaming Lips fan, now.

Solomon Burke, Don’t Give Up on Me

Yeah. I’m still digging this.

The Soft Bulletin by the Lips is just as good, possibly better, than Yoshimi. If you dig Neutral Milk try any of the following: The Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, Bright Eyes, and possibly even Of Montreal.

I’m with dj smurf. I used to live in athens and have had the pleasure of seeing a lot of those bands. elf power’s ‘winter is coming’ is really good, but the best in my opinion is neutral milk hotel. that album gives me goose bumps everytime i listen to it.

I’m with you on Flaming Lips. I never really appreciated any of their other stuff but Yoshimi got me all turned around on the subject. Catch them as Beck’s new backup band (I saw watched them on Austin City Limits and my friends who caught the last tour said they were great together).

The new Radiohead album (“Hail to the Thief”) is coming out although it is already available and I recommend a spin.

Anything by Lemonjelly will blow you away. Their DJ does the animation for the videos too (which are pretty sick).

On frontmen’s side projects tip, Stephen Malkmus (Pavement) and Damon Albarn (Blur) have put out an ecclectic array of material in the past year or so (the latter went to Cuba for a month to learn how to play latin grooves from the masters).
