It’s been a while since I’ve read any Atkins book, however I do remember Atkins mentioning that the body processed artificial sweetners the same as sucrose, fructose, etc….and you did state in your article:
“Sugar and artificial sweeteners found in low-fat snacks spike the body’s insulin levels. And since the body quickly converts starches to sugar, starch and sugar are virtually indistinguishable when it comes to metabolism.”
Now, I don’t claim to have anything other than common sense, but it doesn’t seem logical that the body would treat artificial sweetner the same as sugar. I remember reading in an Atkins book (and now I will go double check) something along the lines of, if it is sweet, the body thinks it is sugar. It would seem that the body doesn’t interpret flavor, but chemical composition. Now, I fully follow the Atkins/Protein Power/Zone way of eating, it’s obvious substituting sugar for fat isn’t the way to go, and have not battled with weight since I’ve stopped eating complex carbs. However, I find it hard to believe that the body processes artificial sweetner the same as it does sugars.

Radley, you definitely make a case that the “food pyramid” is a bad diet based on science. But you don’t actually believe that what americans actually eat mirrors the “food pyramid” do you? Most Americans don’t come anywhere close to the vegetable and fruit servings that are recommended on the “food pyramid”. Yes, Americans don’t eat properly and it is one reason they are fat. But you can’t blame a diet for this, that you haven’t shown Americans actually follow.

I almost cried today when I found out about Dr. Atkins. I think his discoveries and philosophies will continue to make us healthier for years to come. From my experience, anyone who argues an anti-Atkins position has not done a lot of research. I can tell you that I feel like an entirely new person since I quit eating bread and pasta, not to mention refined sugars. People can believe whatever they choose, but I think the Atkins diet will be the norm within the next 10 years.

type 2 sufferer: Read the whole chain of articles:

    Taubes original:
    http://atkinscenter.com/Archive/2003/1/20-542932.html

    Fumento critique:
    http://www.reason.com/0303/fe.mf.big.shtml

    Taubes rebuttal:
    http://www.reason.com/0303/taubes.shtml

    Fumento closing:
    http://www.reason.com/0303/fumentoreply.shtml

After reading the entire thread and actually comparing what was said by each man with how the other portrays it, I’ve come to two conclusions:

    1. Taubes is overstating the benefits of Atkins. To what extent? It’s unclear and largely comes down to deuling quotes and experts.

    2. Fumento is completely dishonest and cannot be trusted. Three quick examples: a) The discussion of problems measuring fat intake, b) The difference between “intervention studies” and “intervention effect”, and c) The discussion of uncontrolled surveys.

Read what Fumento claims Taubes says about each of these things in Fumento’s final piece. Then go back to Taubes’s rebuttal and see what he actually says.

I am forced to conclude that Fumento is a liar.

People, this diet is unhealthy. You may quickly and easily lose weight, but it is all in muscle. Not to mention that Carbohydrates lubricate your joints. Please see http://www.leonardfitness.com/atkinsdiet.htm
