Thursday, April 3rd, 2003Some of you commented on the drug war post below about the current batch of ads tying marijuana use to everything from unprotected sex (which of course leads to unwanted pregnancy) to highway fatalities to — and this one’s a doozy — accidental gunshot death. And you’re right. The latest round commercials are every bit as stupid as the terrorism commercials. And every bit as deceptive.
Let’s play “follow the money:”
Where do you suppose ONDCP got its data for the unprotected sex claims?
Answer: From our old friends at the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, or CASA.
And where does CASA get the bulk of its funding?
Answer: From our old friends at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Funny how RWJF seems to be at the business end of every major campaign that aims to tell you how to live your life, doesn’t it? $9 billion goes a long, long way.
The marijuana-teen sex study might be the very most dubious in CASA’s copious collection of dubious studies. The indispensible folks at Activist Cash tell us:
One of CASAâ??s more remarkable numerical contortions caught the notice of UC Santa Cruz sociologist Mike Males, who wrote about it in the April 2002 issue of Youth Today. Males notes that a CASA study financed by the Kaiser Family Foundation concluded that a whopping 89 percent of teens who used drugs or alcohol were â??at riskâ? of having unprotected sex. A look at the original survey data, however, reveals that only five percent of high school seniors had actually engaged in unprotected sex after using drugs or alcohol. This, of course, was before CASA and Kaiser cooked the books. In order to inflate its statistics by 1,790 percent, the 15-17 age group was lumped together with those between 18 and 24. In making this â??adjustment,â? they also included married couples! Lastly, they made allowances for studentâ??s vague guesses about whether â??people my ageâ? just might mix drinking and sex. The result: the five percent of 15-17 year-olds who actually engaged in high-risk behavior were ignored in favor of the 89 percent of 15-24 year-olds who thought someone in their age group â??mightâ? do so. Guess which number made the evening news?
I love that they included stats between married couples. Unbelievable.
That gives me an idea. You wanna’ see marijuana get legalized overnight? Run this headline:
“CASA STUDY: MARIJUANA CAUSES INCREASED SEX AMONG MARRIED COUPLES.”
Run that, and RJR’s got “Marlboro Greens” on the shelves at Rite Aid before the sun goes down. Unless Pfizer beats them to it.

I really like that Activist cash site with the exception of one point, they never disclose their own sources of funds. It seems it would be a more honest player if it was upfront about their own sources. Just my $.02

and the problem with that is…? Facts are, booze and cigs are WAY worse than Pot. Sylvia Seclorum gets you way higher, just not for as long, and it’s LEGAL. this makes the problem the length of time you’re under it’s effects. Same goes for alcohol, it lasts a while. but you can spin around in your back yard for 2 mins and get the same effect for not as long, (and for free). Well drunks are angry, fellows. TV, books and several family members prove that. Then look at pot’s effects. you turn mellow, happy, you lie on a couch and talk with friends. all is well! you become patient, adn experience a sense that things are good in the world. Simple don’t drink and drive…don’t smoke and drive! make it legal fer christ sakes! oh and I plan to try that married couples idea. As for the anti-smoking ad campaigns, well they’re BS. unprotected sex for that much weed? what was that, a 30 bag? jesus! ANYONE HEARD OF FLUZENAPREM? aka rope? the most notorius date rape drug ever? whats that, $5-8 a pill? well, you can get it at ANY COLLEGE. yes, any. Who leaves a loaded gun with no lock or even SAFETY in an unlocked draw with no parents at home in access of two twelve-year-olds? can we say GUN CONTROL COMMERCIAL? (who DID get the fish, anyway)? In a roadside study 1 in 3 people tested posative for marajuana. that counts people walking, people passed out, and the 10 or so stoners crammed into the hippie busses. I’ll post back later.
