This City Paper piece personifies DC in its truest form. Only those who live and/or were raised in the city -- like me -- know that this is standard operating procedure for the District.

Anything and everything can happen when it comes to the DC DMV. Think that story is bad? You should have seen the District Government back in the "old days", pre-computer.

This story is 100% accurate.

I'm happy that I'm not going to DC now.

This sounds like urban legend territory-- an insurance company that paid off a claim in about a week, and in the same week sold off the vehicle? All this taking place during/after a major snowstorm? While at the same time knowing it was going to get adverse publicity? Sorry, but until some names and detail are provided, I don't believe it.

That sucks, especially the part about losing her personal effects that were still inside the car. However, it's not *quite* so bad as it sounds. She didn't lose a $23,000 Jeep -- she lost a $23,000 Jeep plus an unspecified amount of debt attached to it. The insurance company didn't just give her a $2000 check -- it also paid off the rest of the note. She is now free to use her $2000 from the insurance company to make a down payment on a new (or used) car, while acquiring a new debt.
