Disappointing Item of the Day.

Nix those intriguing suspicions about Mick Jagger’s possible libertarian bent.

The Stones are giving a free concert to “raise awareness about global warming.”

Being a tax-dodger does not make one a Libertarian… and while we’re on the subject, being a multi-millionaire cliche in an over-hyped band doesn’t make one an expert on the environment, the economy or the political landscape. Mick, Bono, Babs and Don Henley all are fine musicians, but as SNL pointed out recently with John McCain, I don’t want my politicians doing musicians’ work any more than I want musicians to involve themselves in politics. [Paradoxically, however, I do like Fred Thompson as the DA on "Law & Order", at least more than the woman from "Footloose" and the un-funny Woody Allen movies...]

And the Stones are not over-hyped!

I was specifically thinking of U2 when I wrote that, the Stones just got caught in the cross-fire. But at the same time, it seems to me that the Stones have been coasting for the last few albums, and their solo projects have been largely disappointing (except CW - his jazz stuff is cool)…

‘Don’t Stop,’ the Stones’ last single off 40 licks, is easily in the same league as any song they ever recorded. Now whether the two albums before that are of the same quality, probably not. But if any band deserves to coast, its them.
