The 2002 Agity Awards.

Monday, December 30th, 2002

You’re probably wondering why I’m wearing a tuxedo right now. Well, I was inspired by Andrew Sullivan’s year-end awards (though I didn’t agree with most of them), and anxiously waiting for Jim Henley’s. So in the ‘tween time, I came up with my own. The Agities! So if you don’t mind, we’ll skip the grand, musical show-opener (believe me, you don’t want to hear me sing), and get right down to business.

Here we go….

Agity Man of the Year:
Tiger Woods, for reasons explained here.

Agity Woman of the Year:
Condi Rice, early Agitator.com endorsee for U.S. president, 2008.

Agity Disappointment of the Year:
George W. Bush. Made every possible incorrect decision on free trade. Sent armed federal thugs into convalescent centers in California to harass terminally ill marijuana users. Sent John Ashcroft after teriminally ill people in Oregon who wish to end their own lives. Signed into law a campaign finance bill he admitted he thought was “unconstitutional,” despite taking an oath to “uphold and defend the constitution.” Caved on school choice and farm subsidies. Has commited to a 20+ year nation-building project in Iraq, despite a campaign pledge to forgo nation-building.
Runner-up: Jesse Ventura. Abandoned any quasi-libertarian policies he may have supported once he took office.

Agity Villain of the Year:
Ret. Admiral John Poindexter. D.C.’s tradition of “failing upward” continues. Break the law, lie to congress, win access to the initimate life details of every living American!

Agity Villainess of the Year:
Calvina Fay. Threatened your humble Agitator with a libel lawsuit. Attempted to get your humble Agitator fired from his FoxNews.com columnist gig. Heads most virulent anti-drug organization in the country. Suppresses attempts to publicize the stories of hundreds of kids abused at the hands of said anti-drug organization’s forbear, Straight, Inc. Attempted to get the medical license revoked from a professor who advocated medicinal marijuana. Calvina’s prize — an Agitator.com thong – is in the mail. Evil, evil wench.

Agity Villainous Couple of the Year:
Mel and Betty Sembler. Read.

Agity Villainous Politician of the Year:
Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Col.), for attempting to rip apart a family by deporting an honor student smuggled into the country from Mexico by his mother many, many years ago.

The Church of Scientology.

Agity Hero of the Year:
Ex-Arizona Cardinals linebacker Pat Tillman, who eschewed the life of an NFL star for U.S. military service after September 11.

Agity Hero of the Year (politician division):
Outgoing New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson. The highest elected official yet to come out in favor of drug decriminalization. Replaced by Bill Richardson. Too bad, New Mexico.

Wes Fager, for his tireless efforts to bring the Straight, Inc. story to the public.

Agity Faux-Hero of the Year:
Chief Charles Moose, for bumbling his way to celebrity.

Steve Earle. Come on, kids. Jane Fonda he ain’t.

I will be sending a Native-American woman to accept my award for “Agity Comments Section All-Star”. Then I am moving to my own island, only to return when my children kill their siblings’ significant others or if there are more zeroes on the end of a check than there are good ideas in the script.

I think the “Tator” awards sound better than the “Agity” awards.

Then, you could expand it and have an awards show for kids. The “Tator Tots” award. Get it?

I got to see the votes man. How in the hell did “The Man Show” not make it on the runner-up list.

I would like to thank all those who took the time to read my comments. Without people like you, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

(goes off to wonder why I wasn’t listed first)

I agreed with most of your awards, blah blah blah, well thought out, blah blah blah, but Mullholand Drive? Are you, or are you not a male? I’ve recommended this movie to co-workers, friends, and relatives, saying: “Mainstream movie, two graphic lesbian scenes!”

Plus, the juxtaposition of the idealized as opposed to the actual life of an aspiring Hollywood starlet was a brilliant, ironic inversion of the hackneyed “Hollywood Horatio Alger” story. And if that doesn’t do it for you, the scene with the vigorous self-abuse ought to.

    Carl –

Points well-taken. Naomi Watts certainly has all the right parts, and in all the right places.

But I watched the movie twice (OK — I wanted to see the lesbo scenes again), and still haven’t the foggiest idea what happened.

I’ve read lots of reviews, and they’re usually every bit as cryptic as the movie was.

Did you get the copy of “When I Was Cruel” that I “tipped” you? It’s funny how that happened–I was at work, reading TheAgitator (as usual) and I realized that I had never tipped you like I do all the other blogs I like, so I clicked through to your Amazon wishlist. I happened to be listening to “When I Was Cruel” at the moment, so when I saw it on your wishlist, I couldn’t help myself.

Confused about Mulholland Drive? Read this http://dir.salon.com/ent/movies/feature/2001/10/23/mulholland_drive_analysis/index.html

I have to say that I got the movie after watching it…but I had to sit and think about it for a bit. There are still aspects of it that are a mystery though. Such is life…

Linda Lovelace? Yeah, she was “deeper than deep throat,” but then she turned around and tried to get porn banned and said her husband/manager forced her to do everything, including a dog. Come on!

Does the vixin of the year get an Agitator thong too??? Maybe next year the citation would read “Wet, upside down tongue kisses while wearing The Agitator thong…”

Maybe I have missed it, but have you failed to mention the best rock album of the year? Queens of the Stoned Age album is my favorite of last year, without a doubt.

Wow what a great New Year!

I return to work to find that I’ve won an Agity (I’d like to thank my supervisors for never paying attention to what I’m doing…) and I’ve also won the office college bowl picks pool! I’m so far ahead now with just 2 games to go that nobody can catch me. Take that all you guys who think you know more about football!

My nomination for an Agity All Star is Radley’s dad. He doesn’t post much but when he does it is very, very funny.
