Friday, December 20th, 2002Last July, I wrote a piece of satire for Tech Central Station. The premise: the news cycle has been growing ever shorter for the last decade, mainly because of the onset of cable. In the last five years, it’s grown even shorter, because of the Internet. I narrated a fictional (or so I thought) account of the 2002 midterm elections in which news coverage of politics — led by the blogosphere — actually caught and surpassed reality itself. So stories would come out ahead of time, and politicians would have no choice but to do what the media told them.
It was basically an attempt at humor that only political junkies like me could fully appreciate. So it didn’t get much attention.
But looking back at it now, one paragraph in particular caught my eye:
In the end, the Republicans retained the House by three seats, and regained the Senate with a seat to spare. Alertly, InstaPundit proprietor Glenn Reynolds quickly announced that a consensus of GOP senators had rallied behind Tennessee’s Bill Frist as new majority leader, thus leaving Mississippi’s Trent Lott on the outs.“Never been much of a Lott fan,” Reynolds said, “Frist is a good guy. Gives Tennessee some clout, too.” Reynolds was later offered, but turned down, a position as Frist’s Chief of Staff.
This morning, newspapers are reporting that Bill Frist is set to challenge Lott. And he’ll probably win.
So in a satirical piece about bloggers predicting the future — and causing it to change — your humble agitating blogger predicted that Instapundit would cause Trent Lott to be removed as majority leader, and that he’d probably be replaced by Bill Frist. The blogosphere (Reynolds, with Andrew Sullivan and Atrios, in particular) has been largely credited with bringing the Lott issue to life, and if Lott gets ousted, it’ll be thanks to blogs. And Frist will probably be his replacement.
Thick layers of satire and irony, as we sometimes say here, piled atop one another.
