Out, Damn Lott!
Saturday, December 14th, 2002Yeah, I shamelessly stole that clever title from Virginia Postrel. It looks like Lott will keep his job. How cynical. How unfortunate. How depressing.
Here’s more:
Andrew Sullivan details Lott’s close friendship with an avowed segregationist.
Brink Lindsey peruses the website of the Council of Conservative Citizens, subject of yet another Trent Lott ugly racial flare-up a few years back.
I’ve decided that I won’t be voting Republican again — for any office — until Lott’s gone. John J. Miller wants to know why freedom-loving people don’t vote more reliably Republican? This is why. That Republicans don’t have the political will to oust a bigot only lends credibility to leftist (wrong, I believe) suspicions that beneath the thin veneer of “big tent” talk, the party is little more than a mouthpiece for half-hibernated Dixiecrats.
So long as the GOP is led by Lott, the GOP is paralyzed.
There is, for example, a non-racist non-bigoted case to be made against racially-motivated set-aside programs for federal contractors.
But Trent Lott can’t make it.
There’s a non-racist non-bigoted case to be made in favor of not only extending welfare reform, but given its success, of cutting back benefits even more.
But Trent Lott can’t make it.
There’s a non-racist non-bigoted case to be made in favor of ending thought-policing, soul-exploring federal hate crimes statutes.
But Trent Lott can’t make it.
There’s a non-racist non-bigoted case to made against the growing support for slavery reparations.
But Trent Lott can’t make it.
Nearly every personality on the right who’s not a politician has called for Trent Lott’s removal. Where are the clear-thinking Republican Congressmen on this one? Where’s Christopher Cox? Bill Frist? Richard Lugar? George Allen? Why does John McCain choose now to be loyal to Lott?
The stupidity is breathtaking.

I too will be voting for no Republicans until Loot is gone.
Radley, you need to email Lott’s office and let them know what you are doing. I would like to think that the man would step down if he knew that his staying in power would cost his entire party actual votes, but my guess is he won’t care. So long as he stays in power, he won’t mind if the party foot soldiers on the state and local level don’t get my vote. Some party leader.
I have to start checking for typos before I post these things. Obviously that is suppose to be Lott.
I e-mailed my Senator, the supposedly hated Peter Fitzgerald, and then I e-mailed Trent Lott, who has probably been deluged with e-mails. We’ll see Jan. 3 what happens. Will Nickles lead the charge against Lott again?
In all honesty, I am shocked he hasn’t yet been removed. But maybe the fact that all the senators are home might be why no one’s lining up to crucify him yet.
Don’t be suprised. Once again the GOP appears to be showing it’s penchant for irreparibly damaging itself, and then wonder why they lost it, just when they got into good position. This is beginning to look like Newt all over again.
So Lott gets sacked by the GOP — and in the process, further legitimizes the use of hypersensitivity, amplified and distorted like a metalhead’s Stratocaster by the losing party in the last election, as a political weapon.
When are we going to stop kowtowing to such emotion? Lott’s critics are spinning this like it was made by Pratt & Whitney, blowing it far, far out of proportion — and I think that the proper response for the GOP is to stiffen their spines and RETURN FIRE.
Call these critics on the carpet:
(1) Hold them to account for embracing one single, INTOLERANT interpretation for Lott’s statement — the one that best serves their attempt to turn this molehill into a mountain.
(2) Demand that they both apologize and repent for the policies they have promoted (and continue to promote) that have done REAL damage to people of color in this nation.
If the GOP wishes to remove Lott from Majority Leader, let them do so do so for the right reasons; like, say, his willingness to practice pork-barrel politics while preaching fiscal discipline. (This is one reason I am now an independent instead of a Republican.) That will not happen — too many of them would have to be added to that pink-slip list, as well.
The comments at the Thurmond celebration are not reason to sack him — to sack the Majority Leader on those grounds will move us away from sound governance, and towards making the poltics of hypersensitive emotion and personal destruction the supreme law of the land.
hey…someone said something about Senator Lugar…whatever it was, it better have not said anything bad about my main man, Dicky L…all ya’ll lay off the DL!…that’s it…and Lott’s a dumbass…
