Mickey Kaus – no right winger — sponsored a contest last week asking his readers to identify what it is about John Kerry that’s so unnerving (scroll down — Kaus doesn’t have permalinks. But be sure and check out his great coverage of the Howell Raines/New York Times/Augusta National fiasco as you’re scrolling).

Kaus artiuclated that he really doesn’t like Kerry, but he can’t figure out why.

Well, Eve Tushnet may have uncovered the winner for Kaus. It’s none other than Garry Trudeau, the leftist creator of Doonesbury! Eve found two cartoons (here and here) Troudeau wrote about Kerry in 1971 that are just as apt today as they were then.

The Republicans would do very well in a Kerry/Bush match-up. Kerry might in fact be the only viable candidate for the Democrat nomination who’s a bigger ass than Gore. Just like in 2000, Kerry is articulate, knowledgeable, and on paper would make dogfood of Bush in every debate. And yet polls would once again show Bush the winner, simply because Kerry’s the kind of guy people love to hate.

I know why I don’t like him: he’s exploitative, he’s weasly, and he’s an unapologetic statist.
