A Blow to Privacy

Setting aside the actual substance of the ruling (for an opnion on that, check here), is anyone else at least a little troubled by the phrase “secretive federal appeals court?”

It’s the “Ashcroft” factor. An extension of the “in order to have peace, we must go to war” line of thinking that everyone seems to be buying into.

Obviously we need to appeal this one to the secret SUPREME Court…

What the hell is wrong with this country? Are we too busy watching “Gilmore Girls” and reading “People” to realize there are fascist elements in control here?! Our grandparents fought to destroy fascism sixty years ago, and we’re either too dumb or too complacent to realize that we and our parents are allowing it to return! Man, stuff like this pisses me off… Thanks for posting this, Radley; this is the sort of news that should be on the front page of every newspaper.

I agree that this is troubling, but I don’t think that’s any reason to disparage “Gilmore Girls.” It is a very good show.

I will assume that Joe Sims just temporarily lost his head, and that he is as interested in whether Luke and Lorelei will ever get together as the rest of us.

Yeah, you’re right, Eric: I let my emotions get the best of me… If I had been thinking clearly and rationally, I would have said “Fear Factor”, not “Gilmore Girls”. My bad…

BTW, who are Luke and Lorelei? Aren’t they on “General Hospital”?

Also a good commentary in the Washington Times today regarding this. It is just amazing to me that the general public just seems to be bending over, with a jar of vaseline in hand.

    Joe-

Please quiet down, I’m trying to watch The Osbornes.

    Thanks

Luke and Lorelei will get together… I was a little disapointed at Rory’s decision to write her college entrance essay on Hillary Clinton though…

The part that gets me is that the decision was only partly declasified. Does this mean that we don’t even know how our civil liberties are going to be violated or if those violations are really what this secret court said were okay?? Sounds like the court handed the government a blank check that can’t bounce…

What bothers me even more (as if Secretive & Federal aren’t enough) is the obvious “horse shoes & hand grenades” approach (i.e. close enough) to whether it is Constitutional. Note in the following quote the “certainly come close” part. Talking about crap that makes you scream and want to throw things. It either is or is not Constitutional, if it doesnâ??t meet the minimum requirements then itâ??s not period, close donâ??t count!.

“We think the procedures and government showings required under FISA, if they do not meet the minimum Fourth Amendment warrant standards, certainly come close,”
