Fun With Mail…

Haven’t dipped into the mail bag in a while. Up first, a doozy:

Check out www.worldsocialism.org under “socialist standard”(SPGB companion party section) for some interesting data refuting your claims about global capitalism.

Honestly. I don’t have time to refute anything put out by anyone who would register the doman “worldsocialism.org.”

Reader J. Keen Holland writes:

As for conservatives not getting the joke with Revolution and Back in the USSR, the problem for the Beatles was that no one on the right could stand their ideas after the unironic Imagine and My Sweet Lord (Hari Krishna).

Well, that’s not really true at all. “Imagine” was solo John Lennon, not the Beatles. Likewise for “My Sweet Lord,” which was solo George Harrison. Both were released well after “Back In the USSR.” I think conservative anti-communists misunderstood “Back in the USSR” at the time because they were short-sighted, rather ignorant, lacked a sense of humor, and were too ready to believe that rock n’ roll was evil, communism was evil, and so the two must have somehow been connected.

As for “My Sweet Lord,” it’s probably my favorite song by any of the solo Beatles. It’s actually not a tribute to Hari Krishna so much as a general nod to Far Eastern religion. I’m not a follower of any of the Eastern faiths, but I do think there’s much to be admired about many of them — Taoism in particular. There are references to Vishnu, Buddha and Sikhism peppered throughout the song, and in fact, it even made Bruce Bartlett’s list of forty “conservative” songs, though he gave the obligatory “it’s cool but it’s not Christian” disclaimer.

From the “out there” files comes this email from Marcus Pegram, responding to my Fox column on world capitalism:

Do you really feel that a one world government and one world economy is the answer? I’m not sure if you aware of the fact that these great ideas are destine for disaster. No matter how “unmistakable the numbers are”, once these prophesies are fulfilled (and I feel sure they will be), the inhabitants of earth will live in an environment that only Revelations can described.

I should’ve cleaned up Marcus’ grammar a bit. I guess I’ll get mine for embarassing him once the rapture comes. But to anwer: No, I’m not a fan of “one world government.” Yes, I’m a big fan of a “one world economy.”

    Radley,

I would think you had read enough about Straight. Inc., and the Republicans that invented and operated it, to understand by now that rock-n-roll and communism are both evils that can be directly traced to the root of all evil- drug use.

At least that is the line we were taught.

Hmm, if that were true, high school would’ve made me a sick guitarist and a hard line Maoist.

I cannot believe this was the last comment? So let us be controversal. what was the difference between Russia 1917 and 1989 and the Us in the same period from the position of the working class. A socialist would say:nothing at all”.
