But I’m not sure I agree with Nick’s line about how conservatism has “evolved” to fit the changing times. Isn’t one of the fundamental tennets of conservatism a Burkean death-grip on tradition?
I don’t think conservatism has changed — at least not since Goldwater. I think it’s more that Pat Buchanan was never really a part of the “movement.” Rather, they tolerated him because he was articulate and well-written and could hold his own with Michael Kinsley.
I’d like to think that Buchanan has always made conservatives squirm. Because if conservatives really are at all in tune with some of Pat’s more paleo, “Edlers of Zion,” Eurocentric inclinations, I’m even further from the “conservative” label than I thought.
Buchanan has nothing to say to anyone but the most rabid of bigots. it’s libel of a political position to call him ” a conservative”. I’d only compare him to one other self styled politician, the “little general”, Perot. They’re both mentally deranged, negating all the intelligence each obviously possesses.
I agree the war on drugs that has been going on for 20 years is a joke!!!!! I guess I’m not as conservative as I thought either. I am all for legalization of pot. But don’t loose hope.
