Congratulations to the Redbirds for coming through in what was a really, really tough year. There’s nothing not to like about this team. A squad of humble, workaday guys. St. Louis is probably one of the most poorly run cities in America. But Jesus, do they love their baseball. Best fans anywhere. Such is why guys like Mark McGwire, Jim Edmonds and Scott Rolen — guys who weren’t supposed to stay in town long after they were traded — end up falling in love with the fans, and making a career of it. Rolen’s just the latest. He was expected to test the free agent waters next year after helping the Cards ease into the playoffs. He’s now looking for a house in the area, and prepared to ink a long-term deal.

It’d be great to see this team bring home a title.
