Bordick’s Gold Touch
Saturday, September 21st, 2002In other baseball news, Baltimore’s Mike Bordick just set a major league record for consecutive errorless games at shortstop — at 102. Still, in a league beset with glamor shortstops (A-Rod, Jeter, No-Mah, Tejada), what do you think the odds are that an unflashy defensive specialist like Bordick wins the Gold Glove? Slim to none, I’d say. If A-Rod or Jeter had broken this record, it’d be all over the news. Instead, you have to cut to the actual write-up of the game to learn of Bordick’s feat.
Remember, just a few years ago, the Rangers’ Raffy Palmero won the AL Gold Glove at 1st base, despite the fact that he was hurt, and played DH for 90% of the year?
I say nix the vote for Gold Gloves, and award them solely on fielding percentage.

“I say nix the vote for Gold Gloves, and award them solely on fielding percentage.” — The problem with fielding percentage is that it doesn’t account for range: You can’t drop what you can’t reach. This is especially true for middle infielders. This isn’t a criticism of Bordick, just a general observation.
