Please. Stop.

There’s a patently ridiculous quarrel going on about alleged sexism in the blogosphere.

Give me a break. What, should we fund an FCC panel to be sure Glenn Reynolds is adequately representing women and minorities when he hands out his coveted links? If the high-traffic blogs are linking only to male bloggers, or to white bloggers, or to libertarian bloggers, it’s probably because the proprietors of those sites happen to find content produced by those sites of interest.

I’m also not even sure it’s true. When Asparagirl burst onto the scene, she immediately got blog-rolled on every high-traffic site. She’s a talented writer, but there are lots of talented writers in the blogosphere. I’d guess she got links because she quickly became the warbloggers’ collective wet dream — everyone envisioned her as this hot, quirky, city chick with great politics. But she deserved the traffic — she writes like a dream and she’s smart and witty and original — and so she got traffic. Good for her. Virginia Postrel too is well-represented on the major sites, as is Jane Galt, as is Joanne Jacobs. As is Eve Tushnet. Because they’re smart. And eloquent. And well-written.

Dawn Olsen is pissed because none of the big boys link to her “headier” posts, only to the sexual ones, which, she says, are taken out of context. Get over yourself. If no one’s linking to your “headier” posts, it’s probably because they aren’t all that original, or insightful, or intelligent. Lemmesee, you post half-naked pictures of yourself on your site, you post lengthy, detailed posts about giving blowjobs, then you rant because no one takes you seriously as an intellectual? Pshaw.

I’ve been blogging since February. I write for two well-respected media outlets. I get 1,000 readers a day on weekdays. Yet, I’ve yet to make the InstaMan’s grand blogroll, or Stephen Green’s, or Pejman’s – and yet Dawn Olsen has. Why? I dunno. Must be bias, right? Glenn Reynolds must hate redheads. Stephen Green must hate lefties. Pejman’s probably got it out for Hoosiers. Surely something’s amiss.

Or, here’s an idea: maybe those guys just don’t dig my stuff — and they do dig hers. Or maybe they haven’t read it yet. Or maybe they have a roll of blogs they check regularly, so those are the blogs they regularly link to. This is the same type of identity politics horseshit we fight in public policy debates. Give me what’s mine, lest I call you a bigot.

Criminy. If there was one place I thought I’d never hear cries for bullshit egalitarianism, it was in the blogosphere.

I agree, Dawn needs to get over herself. I’m willing to bet her hits and readers would go down significantly if she stopped posting half-naked pics of herself. She’s pretty hypocritical sometimes. i’m wondering Dawn why you removed the post where you called Kelly from american idol trailer trash? and i notice you now have the ass-shot front page. wow, the donations must be pouring in. anyway, i don’t think anybody has a responsibility to link to others. i’m going to expand my permalinks, but hey i have minorities and women in my current one (myself and rachel lucas) but i think most people link to people who agree and think like themselves. well who’s more likely to think LIKE A MAN??? uh….another man maybe?

    Jimmy,

I took it down because I felt bad about trashing someone who I really don’t know in real life. Perhaps you should be so openminded.

It was Nikki anyway, not Kelly. Nikki is pretty trashy though. But you know, I guess so am I. I have taken those pictures down and I received over 1100 hits yesterday, what about you?

I thought so. Get over yourself already.
