No Justice, No Peanuts

On my way to lunch today, I had to negotiate my way through a throng of angry, striking flight attendands from Midwest Express. Angry, attractive, flight attendants. Bustling with their signs and their principles. Lots of them squished into a cozy little walkway, some slightly moistened by a cool D.C. rain. God bless Norma Rae!

Ugh. Welcome to Milwaukee, corporate home of Midwest Express (OK, actually Oak Creek, but it’s right next door). The flight attendants have been out in force downtown for the last 4 weeks, and I can’t avoid being accosted by one when I go out to lunch.

Step 1: Off-duty flight attendant tries to hand me their propiganda sheet

Step 2: I ask, “do you really think the public is on your side, given that most people secretly hate to fly, given the state that the aviation industry is in, and given that Midwest Express Airlines is projecting financial losses into the forseeable future? Oh, and by the way, I heard that flight attendants really did get raises the last 3 years.”

Step 3: Walk away without an answer, enjoying the silence.

The wide leather seats on ME jets are definitely nicer, but the “service” isn’t consistenly better than on other airlines. Except for the fresh chocolate chip cookies. Oh, the cookies…

In any case, the flight attendants union should realize that they don’t have a case, and should accept whatever offer they get until (or if?) the aviation industry turns around. Nothing like shoving another airline into bankruptcy with your “principles”.
