Steven Hatfill

Monday, August 12th, 2002

I was listening to “suspicious” bioweapons expert Dr. Steven Hatfill’s press conference on C-SPAN radio in the car yesterday.

Certainly, there are some suspicious elements in the guy’s story that warrant investigation. He’s apparently one of only about a couple dozen scientists with the access and the know-how to pull off a bio attack similar to the Anthrax assault last fall (in an odd twist, he’s also one of just a few scientists on the UN’s list of potential UNSCOM investigators — that is, should Sadam Hussein allow bioweapons inspectors back in to Iraq, Hatfill might be in the group that goes). Hatfill has also been working on a novel manuscript that involves a bio attack on Washington, D.C. — one that infects members of Congress and their staffs. He was in London when the letter to Sen. Daschle’s office was mailed — from London. And while living in New Zealand, he stayed just a few miles from a town that shares a name with the fictitious elementary school listed on the return address of the Daschle envelope.

But that’s all circumstantial. It’s certainly enough to launch an investigation, but it’s nowhere near enough to convict — or even indict — Hatfill.

I thought the man’s press conference was pretty damned convincing. He pointed out that he works in virology — Anthrax is a bacteria. He hasn’t had a an Anthrax vaccine booster (which is required to retain immunity) since 1999. He has cooperated with every request the FBI has made.

Having apparently learned nothing from the Richard Jewell case, the FBI has again ruined a man’s life to deflect attention from its own inept investigation. Imagine for a moment that Hatfill is innocent — as our system implies we should do until he’s convicted. Each time Hatfill gave permission for agents to search his house, he did so under assurances from the FBI that the searches would be private and confidential. Both times, the FBI vans were accompanied by news helicopters, satellite trucks and cameras — the second time within minutes of Hatfill signing the search waivers.

Hatfill has lost two jobs now as a result of the FBI’s labeling of him as a “key figure.” According to Hatfill, agents searched the home of his girlfriend, detained and isolated her four eight hours, roughed her up, and asked her how it felt to be involved with a man who “killed six people.”

This fall will mark one year since the first Anthrax letter was mailed. The FBI investigation would probably have yielded more results if it had been conducted by the Washington Metro Police Department’s “Lost Intern Division.”

It isn’t difficult to see how the agency, when called into account for its bumbling ineptitude, might leak a name to appease the media. That is, after all, what happened with Jewell. And to this day, the FBI still doesn’t have an Olympic Park bombing suspect in custody.

Maybe the FBI is sitting on evidence that more directly implicates Hatfill. But whatever they have, it obviously isn’t strong enough to indict him — or they would have done it by now. If there’s anything worse than a trusted federal law enforcement agency manipulating the media to implicate an innocent man, it’s one that doesn’t learn its lessons — and does it again.

Innocent or guilty, Steve Hatfill’s reputation is ruined. In my book, so is the FBI’s.

    To Radley Balko:
Maybe the FBI knows more than it is saying. I went to elementary school with Steve and he was diabolical then. You better hope they find the information they need to get him off the street. If you question this, he lived on Western Av and his grade school was Hawthorne in Mattoon,Illinois.

OK Radley Balko, why don’t you give some examples of Steve’s diabolical behaviour? Go on. You are as full of innuendo as the press covering Hatfill’s life and times. Yet, like them, you say nothing really. Anyone can have access to a name and an address. So what!!
He has yet to be proven guilty if there are charges. There are no charges yet and nothing of a very, very bad nature has turned up about his background. He has apparently exaggerated his work history and qualifications. So have a number of American presidents. I recall that Jack Kennedy’s military record was far from exciting but people made as much of his military service -what there was of it so that he could be accepted by the American public. Kennedy came from a line of people whose occupations were somewhat dubious. Kennedy relatives have been implicated in things like rape and drugs. So?
Hatfill presumably felt he knew the stuff that could make a difference. That does not make him an anthrax Unabomber. He is not a lonely, embittered man. He has a girlfriend and a supportive family. What is the deal then?
    You tell us.

You tell me about his supportive family so I can see how much you know. And, what about letters he wrote to people in Mattoon when he was in Africa? He thanked someone for all the persecution he had in highschool that made him a mercenary. However, that is not the diabolical behaviour I am referring to.

Why the comparison to the Kennedy’s, what about Ted Bundy? He was pretty convincing too.

To Radley Balko. Sorry old chap, I should have addressed my comment to the guy who said he had gone to school with Hatfill. His post was followed by: I can’t say on August 15, 2002 09:50 PM

Ted Bundy was a different sort of a person to Hatfill completely I think. He was a real failure, academically and with people. He did not pass his politics degree. He had girlfriends but no lasting relationships. You should read the book ‘The Stranger Beside Me’ by a one of Bundy’s girlfriends. Bundy really was screwed and lacked ‘infrastructure’. He could maintain an act for only so long before it became too much for him - a common characteristic of a ‘borderline’ personality. The lack of infrastructure was due to a poor home life (stepfather) and prior to that a father who deserted him when little. Others of his siblings turned out all right though. My guess is that Bundy would not have lasted long in Rhodesia or South Africa without being found out very soon. Recall, it was in Zimbabwe that a certain Dr Swango, who had some characteristics in common with Bundy who was found out. He was a psychotic killer who killed many people in the US by lethal injection before carrying on at a Zimbabwe mission station.
Hatfill would similarly have been found out by fellow students and colleagues if he was in any way unstable or weird in the long haul. On his trip to the Antarctic where he was a doctor on a South African research ship, he would have been found out because such a trip would mean being very, very close to others in all arrangements. Certain other doctors who have gone on such expeditions have gone nearly insane with the suffocating nature of it all. He must have been a good team player otherwise we would have heard of it through others who went with him. It would have been in the pipeline, you can be sure of that. Numerous reports on the web (newspaper) show that Hatfill has many friends. He had made himself available to former student friends and colleagues on a Zimbabwe Medical Graduate page. If you were a loner and Unabomber you would not avail yourself in that way, nor would you do so if you were not liked. A number of press reports refer to his sense of humour.
Hatfill stored some things at his parent’s storage facility and his father was reported as saying that his son was innocent of the anthrax crimes. That is a supportive parent.
Hatfill was married briefly and divorced shortly afterwards. Nothing is known about this divorce except that his wife did not tell him that she was carrying his child. Her second husband apparently adopted that child and she carried that man’s surname. That daughter grew up and married and had a baby. It was then that she traced her father and was reunited with him. Hatfill’s ex-wife was married twice with one husband having been killed in an accident.
There is nothing sinister here but bad luck in an unfortunate marriage. Bundy was never able to make the step of a marriage at all.
The point I made with comparing the Kennedy family and Hatfill is that it would be pretty difficult to find anyone anywhere who did not have some flaws in the background. As it happens, Hatfill’s background is good, with a father who was an electrician/horsebreeder/ farmer who also became the head of an electrical corporation. Nothing bad. No criminality at all.
I know nothing about the letters of persecution at Mattoon. You have added something to my knowledge here of Hatfill. Bright children are often persecuted by the dumbed-down loudmouths in class. Clearly, Hatfill was treated well in Africa and had some scope to develop some extrovert characteristics without being howled down by others. There would have been greater latitude there in accepting someone else’s individuality and allowing him scope to be an ‘interesting’ person.
I do not believe that he was a member of the Selous Scouts because he would have had to do survival training that could have risked his life. A medico would have been too precious to mess around with in that way but I could be wrong. I base my view on the fact that he did not pass out with the special forces in the US which also would have had very tough training.
I will look up this business about the letters to Mattoon. Very interesting. Do you have any material on that?

Did Hatfill ever try to locate his biological parents? How did he feel when his daughter found him?

    Add karma Subtract karma  +0
  9. #9 |  Skoffel |

Hatfill grew up with his biological parents as far as I know and have read.
His daughter contacted him after she had married and had a baby. Hatfill had up to that time been unaware that he was a father. I have not read anywhere anything about his emotions about being reunited with his daughter. I expect he would have been delighted. Why would he not have been? He is not portrayed anywhere as a monster without proper family feeling.
However, it would appear that he is a person with a big imagination who has bragged about being something of a James Bond hero without that really being provably the case. No-one remembers him as being a member of the AWB and no-one recalls his being a member of the Selous Scouts. He possibly tried to create a ‘tough’ image by pretending to have had that association until he conveniently broke his back. He is also reportedly supposed to have been a pilot. I think that too would have been fantasy. He would probably have seen war casualties and heard stories of bravery of those who were members of the Selous Scouts.
Hatfill would make a good author of sci-fi fiction and Boys Own stories regarding Africa. I guess not too much of that would have been of first-hand experience. However, none of us know and even if Hatfill told us, we are not to know what is a truth or what is a fabrication.
That is all immaterial though. What we do know is that he is accused of mass-murder and that there is absolutely nothing to tie him to the crime except suspicion. Anyone with access to bio-labs where anthrax was being produced could have done the deed. Anyone at all. So all persons working in those labs should be investigated equally whether it is possible that they could have a ‘profile’ or not. What the FBI have done is to produce someone with a past involved in African wars. Doing that so publicly is to reap political capital out of the Moslem population which happens to be mainly black. It is a cynical exercise done without inflaming any of the groups with a real cause to do this thing and yet look as though they are doing something. Recently a Jewish man has been held in regard to possession of weapons and intention of blowing up mosques. He is held for psychological testing. He also happens to be a medical doctor. Who was he going to blame for the crime if he was successful? Hatfill? If a Jewish man was capable of doing that, it may be that a Jewish man was capable of sending anthrax letters. The reason why Jews are so interested in pointing the finger at Hatfill is because his ex-wife and father-in-law are distantly descended from Germans. Their genealogy is on the web for all to see. I have no doubt that Jewish Defense Organisation that has condemned Hatfill and even proclaimed him guilty and a ‘nazi’ may have had that genealogy under consideration and then put their own colour to the rest of it.
There is so much speculation floating about, that I doubt if poor Hatfill can recognise himself from it all.

I think Hatfill waited his whole life to be the center of attention, this is the role of his life time…. I bet he spent his life pleading innocence. He seems the type to stir up trouble and then stand back to watch what happens.

If Hatfill was the type to stir up trouble and stand back to watch what happens, where has he been all this time? No-one in an African defense unit has acknowledged him as a co-fighter or even field doctor in Africa.
Some people at Stellenbosch university (South Africa) said he was ’selfish’ - so are almost everyone else I have ever met. Nothing unusual. He has fibbed and exaggerated on his resume and in private conversation. So?
So what in the hell has he been doing otherwise? Has he robbed a bank, raped women or hit his boss? Where are his public and private displays of menace?
He has spoken up on the ‘Washington Post’ (who have still maintained supportive articles of him) about the threat of bio-weapons. This is very pertinent and very true today. Is that getting attention negatively towards oneself or is it telling the American public something they ought to know?
Did you know that Japan experimented on Chinese during the last war with bio-weapons like plague and anthrax resulting in even vivsection? Others have been there and were doing things like this zonks ago and so could do so again, people are aware of the possibilities of bio-weapons.

    http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2002/08/28/1030508070534.html

What has that to do with it all? It means an outside threat is always there of bio-terrorism or agricultural terrorism, poisoning or disease spreading on crops or animals. People have to be alert to the threat and the U.S. has been so smug that it has not been alive to any threat towards itself in spite of the signs now of Embassies being bombed and individuals murdered overseas.
If those five people who died on account of anthrax letters for anything, it is the new alertness the United States has of bio-terrorism and how easy it is to carry out.
Hatfill has said publicly that he has not led a ‘perfect life’. Neither have I, nor have you and the majority of other people.
But does that mean he is guilty of mass-murder? Does it mean that he should be held to public account when there is no evidence? The person most likely to commit a crime according to what people think they should be like is often innocent. It is his right to be innocent until someone can find him guilty. That someone should not shout ‘guilty’ just because they do not like Hatfill’s life history. He could do so to you or me too. How would you like that?

I remember what Richard Jewell subjected to and I recall a Criminal Justice system that is based upon the premise of innocent until proven guilty. It is obvious to me that those who feel they have the right to render summary judgement on Mr. Hatfill pose a greater threat to our system of justice than Mr. Hatfill could ever achieve.
